The mission of CMS is "to protect the natural, scenic, and open space values of Clark Mountain Sanctuary. An integral part of its purpose is to preserve the natural resources of the fields, forests, water, wildlife, and compatible agricultural interests of Clark Mountain Sanctuary so that activities on the land will promote the spiritual betterment of mankind, including the values and principles of truth, love, peace, right action and nonviolence."

Clark Mountain Sanctuary leases approximately 400 acres of land from Jim Nesbitt and acts as the primary steward of this land, paying associated expenses, managing three camps, and doing the work of maintaining and caring for the land. CMS currently subleases one of its leased buildings ("the 4-Bay") to the JED Collective.

The CMS Board of Directors meets periodically to do the business of the organization. This Board is made up of Jim Nesbitt, Naomi Nesbitt, two representatives from the JED Collective (currently Bridgette Bartlett and Kate Brennan), and Judy Marden, who owns and cares for nearly 200 acres of neighboring land that is protected by easement through the Androscoggin Land Trust.

CMS and JED are engaged in a long-term process to solidify the future of this land as protected space and to forge a shared vision for the future of both organizations.
